Bring Functional Medicine into Your Healthcare Plan
What is Functional Medicine? And how does it differ from “Traditional” or “Mainstream” Medicine?
There are mounting questions about the differences between functional and traditional medicine providers, and recently – who to trust. While there are numerous key differences between these kinds of healthcare providers, there are a number of similarities and basic fundamental skill sets, both of which will be outlined here.
Basic Similarities Between Functional Medicine “Providers” and “Traditional Providers”
Functional medicine and traditional medicine providers alike are invested in finding effective solutions to a wide range of health challenges. It is important to note that both kinds of providers are in fact healthcare providers that may have gone through a variety of training programs and / or subsequent residencies.
Given this basic shared background, it is unsurprising that both functional and traditional medicine providers use similar means of gathering certain kinds of information, such as physical exams, various forms of basic testing and imaging, and gaining a thorough understanding of individual and family medical histories. Both also use these various kinds of information and input to create individual treatment plans to target the health challenges their patients may be facing. This includes certain kinds of basic medication.
Differences Between Functional Medicine “Providers” and Traditional Medicine “Providers”
There are significant distinctions that can be made between functional and traditional medicine providers and the type of medicine they practice. In some ways, the differences that separate these practices are not only ideological and philosophical, but also educational. While traditional medicine is largely focused on “managing” medical problems (i.e. hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia), functional medicine is significantly interested and focused on determining the root cause to treat and possibly eliminate chronic conditions, through the promotion of lifestyles and behaviors that support overall health, emphasizing food, herbs, supplements, and natural remedies.
Intake forms can be much more detailed to learn more about each patient physically, mentally, and spiritually. A holistic view is necessary to truly conduct personalized care.
More time is invested by functional medicine physicians spending more time with patients than with many traditional providers. A key differentiator is that the patient is expected to be invested in improving their health and follow through with the necessary lifestyle changes.
